Health and Safety Manager
Salary: £45,00 to £55,000 depending on experience
Permanent full-time position (35 hours per week)

The CRUK Scotland Institute is one of Europe’s leading cancer research centres. It is core funded by Cancer Research UK and supports cutting edge research into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. The Scotland Institute provides an outstanding research environment, underpinned by state-of-the art core services and advanced technologies.
It’s a busy and dynamic working environment. The Institute employs over 350 staff and students and also supports University of Glasgow colleagues who work at the Institute as well.
The Role
We are seeking a Health and Safety Manager with a strong biological, laboratory or research safety background to lead health and safety management across the Institute. A key part of the role will be acting as the Institute’s Biological Safety Officer, providing specialist advice on biological safety, genetic modification work, containment controls and associated regulatory requirements.
You will also be responsible for the continuous improvement of health and safety across the Institute through the identification of trends and improvements to our safety culture and ensuring that suitable levels of competence are maintained across staff at all levels.
You should be educated to degree standard, ideally in a biological discipline, or have significant previous experience in a specialist related health and safety role within a laboratory, research or similarly regulated environment. You will be able to bring demonstrable experience of health and safety in a biological, biomedical, laboratory, research or similarly regulated environment. Experience of advising on genetic modification work and biological containment arrangements is essential.
In summary, you must have the following:
- a NEBOSH qualification or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of biological safety, including experience of advising on genetic modification work, containment controls and associated regulatory requirements
- Experience of COSHH risk assessment and control measures
- Experience in conducting accident and route cause investigations
- Experience of fire safety management and the application of fire safety requirements in a laboratory or research environment
To be successful in the role you must have demonstrative experience of communicating health and safety to a variety of stakeholders, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to influence and persuade people towards good health and safety behaviours. You should also be familiar with health and safety training with the ability to create and deliver training that captures the imagination and allows for competence to be assessed.
Whilst not essential to the role, experience of DSE and manual handling assessments would be an advantage, as would experience of Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement techniques and a general knowledge of radiation safety.
