Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre

Seven themes, working across Scotland

The Cancer Research UK Scotland Centre is translational research programme that brings together leading scientists and clinicians from across the Scotland to accelerate advances in cancer research. Established in 2022, and funded by Cancer Research UK, the Centre unites expertise from the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, the CRUK Scotland Institute and local NHS partners to deliver world-class, collaborative research.

The Centre’s core mission is to translate cutting‑edge scientific discoveries into benefits for patients. By integrating laboratory research with (pre-) clinical studies and trials, it aims to speed up the development of new diagnostics, treatments and preventative approaches

Working across more than 80 research teams, the CRUK Scotland Centre focuses on cancers with significant impact in Scotland, including Colorectal, Pancreatic, Hepatobiliary Cancer, and Mesothelioma. It also builds on established strengths in Brain Tumours and Gynaecological Cancers. Underpinning these tumour-focused themes is cross-cutting theme on Data, enabling research that spans the full cancer pathway – from early detection to advanced disease.

The CRUK Scotland Institute plays an essential role in the Centre with Owen Sansom as Scientific Director – supported by Charlie Gourley, University of Edinburgh, as the Clinical Director. Several Institute group leaders contribute to the Centre’s mission through their research.
