In Vivo Cancer Biology
Group Leader:
Prof Karen Blyth
Our lab uses in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo preclinical models to study cancer, interrogating the role of cancer-related pathways. By validating in vitro discoveries in physiologically relevant models, we hope to expedite novel therapeutic approaches to the clinic. Current projects investigate how the RUNX/CBFβ complex and the BCL-2 family of apoptotic regulators contribute to tumour progression, recurrence, and treatment response in cancers including breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer.
We are interested in the interplay between tumour epithelium and the microenvironment and harnessing this for improved therapeutic approaches. The group also co-leads the NMGN Cancer Cluster using state-of-the-art mouse models to improve the understanding and treatment of cancer.

Associate Scientist
Kirsteen Campbell
As an Associate Scientist in the In Vivo Cancer Biology lab at CRUK Scotland Institute and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Glasgow I lead research projects focussed on understanding the role of aberrant cell death in cancer development and response to therapy. With expertise in breast and prostate cancer, and interests extending to pancreatic, lung and brain cancer, I use in vivo and in vitro models to help identify new therapeutic approaches with the aim of making cancer treatments kinder and more effective.
An advocate of scientific outreach, you’ll find me happily discussing our research at open evenings, lab tours, work experience and cancer awareness events.
Research Scientist
Laura Martínez Escardó
I am a Prostate Cancer UK Career Acceleration Fellow investigating mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities to reactivate mitochondrial cell death in the context of advance prostate cancer at the In Vivo Cancer Biology group. I was born and raised in Terrassa, a city near Barcelona. My educational background is in Biomedical Sciences. I hold a master’s degree in Biomedicine, specialising in basic and translational cancer research, and a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. My research focuses on cell death pathways and the mechanisms underlying therapeutic resistance in cancer. At the CRUK Scotland Institute, I study how cell death pathways and tumour microenvironmental cues interact to shape treatment response in prostate cancer. By defining the mechanisms that drive therapeutic resistance and identifying opportunities to restore cell death, my research aims to inform the development of more effective treatments for advanced disease. Outside of work, I enjoy making the most of Scotland’s stunning landscapes through hiking, cycling and climbing, and spending quality time with family and friends, often gathered around a good meal.

I am a Senior Scientific Officer within the lab working predominantly on in vivo models of cancer. I work as part of the National Mouse Genetics Network in the Cancer Cluster group where we aim to develop and improve in vivo cancer models in order to align these better with human disease. I obtained my PhD at the CRUK Scotland institute in the field of Pancreatic Cancer and have an honours degree in Immunology from the University of Glasgow.

Leire Dede Adama Manrique
I'm a PhD student looking into harnessing the BCL-2 family induced vulnerabilities as novel therapeutic targets in solid cancers.
Prior to starting my PhD, I completed both my BSc in Molecular Life Sciences and my MSc in Medical Biology at Radboud University in the Netherlands, where I developed my love for research. From there I had a quick stop in Boston before receiving one of the Black in Cancer PhD studentships allowing me to start my PhD at CRUK SI in the In Vivo Cancer Biology group.
I like to be active, so outside the lab you can find me playing almost any sport (or watching it!), travelling and visiting my friends, and for the rainy cold days (which we have lots in Scotland) I do enjoy a movie/show with some ice cream, particularly Ben and Jerry's Cookie dough.
