Interpreting Deep Learning models to advance cancer discovery science
Salary: from £37,000 to £42,893 subject to experience, plus relocation allowance and visa costs if required.
Contract term: Fixed up to 6 years, subject to successful review at Year 3
About us
The CRUK Scotland Institute where the lab is based is a world leading cancer research institute, situated in the vibrant city of Glasgow in Scotland and hosting approximately 60 postdoctoral researcher scientists at any one time. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis.
Project outline
The Computational Biology Group applies a range of computational and Machine Learning approaches to the interpretation and analysis of complex multimodal, ‘deep tissue phenotyping’ datasets derived from preclinical models and human tumours (e.g. Müller et al. (2025), Nature). This includes the application of Deep Learning foundation models to spatial and imaging data, and the development of Large Language Models of biological sequences and their interactions.
A position is available within the group to further advance these models and use them to extract information from ‘deep tissue phenotyping’ datasets. The successful applicant will have significant experience working with machine learning algorithms. They will have strong Python programming skills and familiarity with Deep Learning, including PyTorch would convey a significant advantage. They will have access to our in-house GPU-enabled High Performance Computing platform as well as national HPC resources.
The successful applicant will join an open, collaborative and inclusive interdisciplinary team focused on the use of computational approaches to advance our understanding of cancer. The role will involve extensive interdisciplinary collaborations, and strong communication skills are essential. While computational biology experience would be useful it is not a prerequisite.
