About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity

Position outline

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join an advanced technology group in the institute, focussing on deep phenotyping technology using a combination of advanced spatial methods, tissue imaging, image analysis and artificial intelligence. The Deep Phenotyping Advanced Technology facility aims to increase our understanding of the tumour microenvironment and morphology, and to use this knowledge to aid in the development of novel therapies.

We are looking for a Senior Scientific Officer to assist in the development and analysis of advanced in situ assays including multiplex immunohistochemistry, co-in situ hybridisation immunofluorescence, high plex immunofluorescence and spatial transcriptomics methods. The successful candidate will support with workload planning and the development of junior staff, liaise with academic staff in the research group and external collaborators, and develop high quality tissue based assays, images, and data utilising our state-of-the-art instrumentation (Ventana Discovery Ultra, Akoya PhenoImager, Akoya PhenoCycler, Lunaphore COMET, 10x Xenium, Visiopharm). The post holder will also provide training and support for staff and collaborators and have equipment maintenance and ordering responsibilities.

You should possess a BSc in biomedical science or equivalent and extensive histology experience.  Experience and knowledge of both the theory and practice of immunohistochemistry, antibody validation, and proven ability in interpreting tissue morphology are essential. Previous experience working with multiplex in situ assays, in situ hybridisation, spatial transcriptomics, digital pathology platforms, and image analysis is desirable but not essential as training will be provided. Experience of working with human tissue in the application of the above techniques is also desirable. Excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work well in a team are essential, as the role is integral to numerous exciting research collaborations.
