Permanent full-time position (35 hours per week)

Salary: £35,000 to £45,000 depending on experience

The Role

A rare opportunity to join the CRUK Scotland Institute finance team to fulfil a key role. Working within a busy finance function, you will be an enthusiastic and adaptable finance practitioner, with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute provides a dynamic, diverse and collaborative environment for cancer scientists to deliver cutting-edge discovery research. The Institute has annual operational budget of c£34m, two thirds of which is funded by CRUK via a ‘Core’ award, with the remainder from a diverse mixture of research grants and commercial research contracts. We employ around 330 staff, comprising of research scientists, PhD students, research technicians, as well as administration and support staff. An ambitious strategy is being delivered that will see the scope, scale and achievements of the Institute continue to grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation of monthly management accounts to trial balance stage
  • Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns
  • Assist the preparation of annual statutory accounts in line with the year-end timetable
  • Management of the annual statutory financial audit
  • Review, validation and import of transactional data from operational systems into the finance system
  • Management and development of research service costing models
  • Support budget holders/grant holders to ensure sources of funding are being managed effectively, including analysis and monitoring of external grant awards (at a transactional level)
  • Additional duties as required, specifically continuous improvement projects that maximise the potential and efficiency of the organisation

Qualifications

  • Relevant finance qualification(s) and/or relevant financial experience

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Highly IT literate and proficient with Microsoft Office packages (in particular Excel)
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Experience of preparing financial information to a high degree of accuracy within challenging deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, with the specific capability to effectively convey financial information to non-finance professionals
  • Excellent organisational skills with ability to prioritise effectively and work unsupervised
  • Experience of using accounting packages
  • Willingness to learn new skills and an ability to problem solve using initiative and judgement

Desirable

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel user
  • Experience of planning, budgeting, forecasting and costing
  • Knowledge of financial reporting obligations for charities
  • Knowledge of VAT in the charity/research science sector
  • Experience of SAP Business One
